Shin Min-a on 'Remarried Empress': Familiar Story, Brand-New World

Shin Min-a, Joo Ji-hoon, Lee Jong-suk and Lee Se-young have teamed up for Disney+ original series 'Remarried Empress,' now streaming worldwide. At a press conference held on November 3 at the Conrad Seoul Grand Ballroom in Yeongdeungpo-gu, the cast and director Jo Su-won shared their approach to the drama.
A Mega-Hit Story Comes to Life

The series follows Navier (Shin Min-a), a flawless empress of the Eastern Empire. When Emperor Sovieshu (Joo Ji-hoon) falls for Rashta (Lee Se-young), a former runaway slave, and asks for a divorce, Navier demands approval to remarry Prince Heinley (Lee Jong-suk) of the Western Kingdom. The story is based on a mega-IP with roughly 2.97 billion views worldwide. Its trailer passed 13 million views in 48 hours, and its screening at the 31st Busan International Film Festival sold out.
Originally set to open on November 4, the show released episodes 1 to 4 on the afternoon of November 3 after strong global fan response. Director Jo said he aimed to stay faithful to the source while balancing the seriousness of the novel with the lighter tone of the webtoon.
Shin said the story felt familiar while its world felt fresh, and she focused on the emotional line between the empress and the woman beneath the title, without overplaying her feelings. Joo described Sovieshu as childlike and driven by his heart, and said that after 20 years in the business he is ready for any criticism. Lee Jong-suk worked on the movement of his large CG bird character, while Lee Se-young played Rashta as a form of 'pure evil' and hopes viewers will find her hateful yet pitiable.

Why It Matters
The series shows how Korean romance fantasy is being shaped for a global streaming audience. With 10 episodes, two new episodes arrive every Wednesday after the four-episode premiere.
