Yuristanbek Shygaev's Walk: A Woman Meets a Mythic Being

A woman stands with her arms outstretched in a violet space, her fingertips stopping just short of a tall black creature with branching horns. Yuristanbek Shygaev's 1990 oil painting Walk (110 x 80 cm, collection of the artist) captures the artist's long-running interest in merging human and animal forms. It is also a quiet study of how two very different beings might share the same world.
A Meeting Across a Small Gap
The woman's body is stretched vertically, with narrow shoulders, thin arms and long legs. Her face tilts upward to the right, drawn with a few simple lines, and her pale skin carries traces of gray and brown paint. Her dark brown hair streams to the left all the way to the edge of the canvas, layered with short strokes of brown, black and red that suggest wind. The effect is a still, frontal pose combined with strong horizontal motion.
Opposite her stands the black figure, built in a completely different way. Two thick lines split from its head like horns or tree branches, its torso is long and narrow, and its arms are short while its legs stretch downward. Rough brown and gray marks break up the black surface. Human posture, animal horns and branching wood are combined in a single body.
Despite their differences, the two share a stance: elongated legs and arms extended to the side. The woman's right hand reaches toward the creature's outstretched arm, and the two lines come close without touching. That small gap creates the painting's tension and draws the viewer's eye to the fingertips.
Color, Texture and Structure
The canvas is divided by two saturated colors. A deep violet fills the left side and the space between the figures, making the woman's pale body stand out. On the right, a crimson field spreads behind the black figure, its curved border overlapping the creature's torso and showing through between its legs. The cool violet and warm crimson set up a sensory contrast, while the black form holds the boundary between them.
Brushstrokes and scratch marks remain visible across the surface, with varied directions and paint thickness in the violet ground and short layered strokes in the red. The woman's skin carries small scattered marks, while the black figure's body has the roughest texture. A narrow dark green band at the bottom serves as the ground, giving both figures a shared baseline and steadying the composition.
From Everyday Life to Mythic Imagination
Set beside Shygaev's earlier work, Walk shows a clear evolution. In the 1986 color print Girl with a Dove, a girl, a horse and a dove appeared together as distinct figures in a realistic space. In the 1987 work Abduction, a red animal's body stretched out and fused with wheel-like and symbolic forms, blurring the line between living creature and sign. His 1990 painting Hawk's Majesty kept a concrete hawk surrounded by light columns, circles and horn-like curves.
In Walk, those symbolic elements are absorbed into the body of the black figure itself, so the relationship between the two beings feels more direct. Where Abduction stretched horizontally to suggest movement, the figure here stands upright and faces the woman.
His early portraits, such as the 1983 pencil drawing Limma and the 1984 Asanbai Ata, relied on faces, clothing and domestic details to convey individuality. In Walk, the woman's facial features are pared down, and what matters is her open-armed posture and the reach of her hand. Humans and animals recur throughout his paintings as parts of nature and as carriers of mythic imagination, sometimes facing each other and sometimes merging into one body.
Why It Matters
Walk shows how Shygaev moved from observing real people and animals toward a painted world where humans and symbolic beings stand side by side. Its power lies in restraint: no complicated narrative, only matching postures, contrasting colors and a few centimeters of violet between two hands. That small distance becomes the point where human and nature, reality and myth, meet.
