Steel or Gold? How Executives Can Pick a Watch That Fits the Room

For CEOs and senior executives, a wristwatch is both a personal accessory and part of the overall outfit. K trendy NEWS (KtN), a Seoul-based outlet, explored how steel and gold watches create very different impressions in boardrooms, investor meetings and formal dinners.

The comparison starts with two pieces from Vacheron Constantin: a 1970s steel Chronomètre Royal with a black dial and angular case, and a gold dress watch with a light dial and a tightly linked bracelet.

Matching the Watch to the Wearer and the Occasion

Mi-kyung Jo, head of CMK Image Korea, says fit depends on facial lines, body shape and the silhouette of the clothing, not just wrist size. Case shape, lug length and strap width can make watches of the same size look entirely different.

Steel with an integrated bracelet suits navy or charcoal suits and white shirts. It works well for finance, law and accounting professionals, because a plain dial keeps attention on the work. The 1975 Ref. 2215 and the 2025 Historiques 222 both measure about 37mm, showing that a fine steel watch does not need to be oversized. Satin finishes read calmer than mirror polish in formal meetings.

Gold bracelets add a decorative presence and sit comfortably with beige, cream and brown outfits. They suit formal dinners, anniversaries, charity events and arts gatherings. For investor briefings or public-sector meetings, a gold case on a leather strap tones down the shine. A steel-and-gold model such as the Rolex Datejust 36 lets the wearer control how much gold shows.

The same logic applies to women executives. Wrist bone structure, clothing silhouette and personal image matter more than whether a watch is labeled men's or women's. Keep rings, bracelets and cufflinks restrained when the watch already carries a lot of metal.

Why It Matters

A watch does not prove expertise or trustworthiness, but its size, material and shine shape how composed a leader looks. Choosing by occasion and proportion, rather than brand or price, keeps the whole outfit balanced.
