Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love' Earns 3 Gotham Awards Nods, Boosting Jeon Do-yeon's Oscar Hopes

Korean director Lee Chang-dong's new film 'Possible Love' has been nominated in three categories at the 36th Gotham Awards, a major American independent film awards ceremony. The nominations were announced on the 28th, and lead actress Jeon Do-yeon is now widely seen as an early contender in the Oscar race.

Three Nominations, a Crowded Field

'Possible Love' is up for Outstanding International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead Performance. Lee and writer Oh Jeong-mi were named together for the screenplay, which they co-wrote, while Jeon was nominated for lead performance. She will compete with acclaimed names such as Julianne Moore for 'The Debut' and Gillian Anderson for 'What Happened at Miasma Camp'. The Best Feature award is limited to American productions with American participation, so the film was not eligible there.

In the international category, the film faces Ryusuke Hamaguchi's 'Suddenly the Illness Worsens' and Sandra Wollner's 'Everytime'. The result follows last year's showing by Park Chan-wook's 'No Other Choice', which was nominated for international feature, adapted screenplay and lead performance, extending a run of Korean films making their mark abroad.

The film follows a married couple, one a laid-off worker and the other a documentary director, whose lives become entangled during the making of a documentary, forcing them to face hidden desires. It earlier won the Special Jury Prize, the Silver Lion, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, the second-highest honor after the Golden Lion, and also won recognition at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Mill Valley Film Festival.

Why It Matters

The Gotham Awards are regarded as a warm-up for the Academy Awards, so these nominations give 'Possible Love' and Jeon Do-yeon fresh momentum. The winners will be decided at the ceremony in New York on November 30.
