Actress Jeon Do-yeon could become the first Korean performer ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, according to forecasts from major North American outlets including The Hollywood Reporter. The buzz centers on her role in 'Possible Love,' the new film from director Lee Chang-dong.

The Hollywood Reporter named Jeon a potential nominee on October 25 local time, and the film currently holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a key barometer in awards season.

Critics Line Up Behind Her Performance

The Hollywood Reporter said it is hard to imagine anyone other than Jeon playing the role of Mi-ok, praising a performance that cuts deepest in the most joyful moments. The Los Angeles Times wrote that this year's list of best performers exists for acting like Jeon's, a remark that hints at growing goodwill among U.S. critics' groups and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Hollywood Reporter also placed 'Possible Love' on its predicted Best Picture list, alongside big-studio tentpoles such as 'The Odyssey,' 'Dune: Part Three' and 'Project Hail Mary.' It also appears in the Best International Feature category, and Jeon is listed among Best Actress contenders next to Jenna Wheeler of 'Rose.'

The film opened in Korean theaters on September 23. It intertwines the stories of two couples: Ho-seok, a laid-off worker played by Sol Kyung-gu, and his wife Mi-ok, played by Jeon; and documentary director Ye-ji, played by Jo Yeo-jeong, and her husband Sang-woo, played by Jo In-sung. Through these characters, it explores class, labor, identity and professional ethics. Netflix will stream it worldwide from November 6, which should strengthen its awards-season campaign.

No Korean actor has yet earned a Best Actress nomination, so even a serious campaign marks a milestone for Korean cinema. With strong reviews and a global Netflix release lined up, Jeon and 'Possible Love' now enter the Oscar conversation as real contenders.
