Gimpo College Opens Its Doors to Adult Learners

Universities are no longer just for people in their early twenties. Gimpo College, a regional college in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, is widening its role from guiding teenagers to teaching working adults through its Lifelong Education Center.

From Teen Career Fairs to Adult Classrooms

On the 15th, the 2026 Gimpo Career Education Expo took place at Gimpo Sports Complex, where middle school students tried out college majors for the first time. Park Hae-ryun, head of Gimpo College's Lifelong Education Center, was among the university officials watching. On the same campus, the center runs separate programs for adults.

For the 2026 academic year, the center offers general courses, an executive program and part-time courses. The second-half general courses include Korean and Chinese-character calligraphy, urban sketching, vocal music and a certification course for folk painting (minhwa) instructors, with 73 participants in total. The minhwa course runs in both daytime and evening sessions so learners can choose what fits their schedules. In the first half of the year, offerings included acrylic painting and practical real estate auction classes.

The center also runs the Korea Technology Executive Program (KTEP), now in its 21st term, which covers management, leadership and cultural topics for local business owners, officials and professionals. In 2025, the college operated a campus of the Gyeonggi Province lifelong learning university program called Bitna G, opening its facilities to adults.

Park said the courses aim to help local residents keep learning in daily life and develop their skills through arts and certification programs.

Why It Matters

As the school-age population shifts, colleges are becoming places people return to at many stages of life, whether changing careers, retiring or pursuing the arts. What counts is how well programs match local demand and whether schedules, such as evening classes, make them reachable for working adults.
